I have no idea what I'm doing. I'm broke, young, and extremely afraid of failure...but you don't need to know that. In my natural state, im a rachet slob with no social prowess, but I've come to the realization that those qualities are not very...desirable. Whether it be for a job, your social life, or just to feel better about yourself, here are a few tips I've picked up to get your ish together...or at least look like it.
WARNING: this advice is generic at best, and life threatening at worst. Continue reading at your own risk.
Hygiene
This seems obvious, but sometimes when you are a slob by nature, this basic principle is hard to abide by. It is always important to be hygienic above anything else, but you don't need to go all out/break your budget.
● Wash your face every day (or every other day.)
I usually do this while I shower. If you are as broke as I am and you don't have any serious acne, I suggest using St. Ives Apricot facial scrub. It's great for exfoliating the skin, opening pores, and it only costs 3$ at your local dollar general/dollar store. If you want something even cheaper, Dollar general's brand is literally the same.
● SHOWER DAILY.
-Use a washcloth to scrub if you don't have a lufa... who has a lufa honestly?
-use bar soap or body wash.
-shave or keep your body hair well groomed and clean. Armpit hair catches extra bacteria, so if you keep it natural, keep that in mind.
● Take care of your hair.
Brush, comb, braid, cut, gel, and give it some love. Your hair (or lack thereof) is an asset. If you work it right, it will serve you. If you ignore it, it will embarrass you.
-Please don't buy cheap hairspray or gel. It's gross.
-Wash with shampoo and conditioner that fits your needs (frizz, heat protection, etc...) but don't be afraid to go generic, check labels and compare brands for the best deals.
-don't wash it every day. It removes natural oils and isn't generally healthy.
● Deodorant
Just do it. Organic, storebought, or homemade... we all will thank you.
● Feet
Don't ignore your feet. I'm guilty as charged on this one, but i'm changing for the good of humanity and you can too.
-wash/soak with a bit of bleach or epsom salt
-scrub with footpad
-clip your toenails
-change your shoes
-put baking soda or shoe powder in your shoes if they stink and put them outside for a few hours
-wear clean socks
-go open toed or barefoot in the house. Let your feet breathe!
● Teeth
-If your teeth are sensitive, look into sensitive toothpaste or toothpaste with baking soda
-brush twice or three times a day
-floss
-if you are cavity prone, avoid whitening toothpaste since it isn't good for your enamel
-whiten naturally and don't bleach. It's expensive and weird. Your teeth are supposed to be white, not blinding.
-mouthwash daily.
-don't have time to brush? Always keep altoids, breath spray, or gum at hand, but don't make it a habit to forget.
-prevention is alot more pleasant than dental treatment...and a lot less expensive.
● Makeup
If you choose to wear makeup, there are items you can get in drug stores... or even the dollar store! But not everything you find is a good investment for your skin, or for your look.
Dollar Store Essentials:
-lip liner (Wet N Wild, LA color, etc are great brands)
-white highlighter or eyeshadow stick. (Great for highlighting the waterline, below the brow, and inner corners of the eye)
-mascara. (Toss it after 3 months and don't buy any tube for a dollar. Clumpy is NOT good unless you are trying to look like a 2007 scene kid)
-lipgloss/chapstick
-brow powder
- lash curlers
Drug store deals:
-powder foundation
-gel/liquid eyeliner
-eyeshadow
-tweezers, falsies, eyelash glue, nail polish, etc...
-b&b cream
-highlighter/shadowing/contour
High Quality Investments:
-foundation
-lipstick
-brushes/blenders
● Scent
Find a signature scent. Something that you love, and isn't too sweet or trendy, but doesn't smell ANYTHING like axe body spray or baby butts.
What to AVOID:
-Trendy celeb sponsored scents. They're often overpriced and teen oriented.
-Anything too strong. Don't use axe. PLEASE don't use axe.
-Baby butt smell. "Sweet pea and violet", "shower fresh", "baby powder" and "clean linen" are common offenders.
-anything too sweet. Unless it's cotton candy...then just let me put my face in your hair.
-anything that has any resemblance to mothballs
What to consider:
-Anything that makes you think of gold, silver, wine of any kind, blue, or lime
-something that just appeals to you!
-something you can stick with. Scent is a strong psychological association. The more stable yours is, the more likely you'll leave a lasting impression
-something dark/bright. Warm tones can be nauseating.
These tips are just the beginning of how you can look like you know how to adult. If you know someone who needs to be told how to hygiene, send them this article! If you are the one who recieved it... you probably need to take a shower.
